*20* Matthias Dreser (1783-1847) Short description Matthias Dreser born in 1783 (date not given) in Metternich (near Cologne), Roman Catholic, and died on 15 January 1847 in Metternich, aged 64. Parents not known Marriage: Matthias Dreser, occupation: "Ackerer und Maurer" (Ploughman and Bricklayer), married Anna Maria Leufer; place and date not given. Not attested. Note: Try variant spellings for Leufer, Läufer, Leuffer, Läuffer. (Läufer, etc, means "runner, messenger".) The standard form chosen for file names is: laeufer Klaus Bung observes that Matthias Dreser combined two occupations. Is this a sign that he was on his way up from a less skilled job (ploughman) to a more skilled trade (bricklayer)? Or was he unable to earn enough as an agricultural labourer (if that's what is meant by "Ploughman") and therefore had to look for an extra income? Note that only the occupation of the men is given; the documents did not even contain an empty field for the occupation of the women: "housewife" was the only thing that was expected. Erika Felicitas Faßbender and her sister Hildegard Faßbender were among the first women to go to university. Erika had a law degree but did not practise. Her daughter Britta Horz, née Bung, does practise. Hildegard Faßbender was a practising doctor when she died at such an early age. Links
